What is sunscreen?
Sunscreens are substances applied on the surface of the skin to provide protection from harmful UV rays. They work by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering the UV rays. It protects the skin from sunburn, premature photoaging, and other skin issues caused by harmful UV rays.
What is SPF?
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (i.e., in the presence of sunscreen) relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin. As the SPF value increases, sunburn protection increases.
What type of sunscreen should I use?
The sunscreen has to be chosen based on your skin type. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there are a few parameters to make the right sunscreen choice:

Every day, year-round! Sunscreen should be used irrespective of the season. Considering the UV exposure, it is at its peak between 10 am and 4 pm. However, you must apply sunscreen whether indoors or outdoors, to get protection from outdoor UV light and indoor blue light.
